Interview tips
CITYside Recruitment
You’ve arrived in good time. You feel confident. You’ve done some
research into the company and you like what you have seen so far. You feel enthusiastic
about the prospect of working there. So now for the interview!
Each business/company/organisation will have their own way of conducting
an interview. Some will have a panel consisting of a representative from Human
Resources, a Departmental Manager and a team member. Others will simply consist
of the hirer in question. Whichever situation you find yourself in, the following
tips should stand you in good stead.
- Smile! It is infectious! Nobody wants to work with miserable
people.
- Maintain eye contact. This demonstrates your interest in
the subject matter and demonstrates that you are alert and confident.
- Listen! Before you attempt to answer a question, be sure
that you’ve heard it properly. Answer questions as fully and as succinctly
as possible. If you don’t understand a question ask for it to be clarified,
don’t guess what you think you are being asked.
- Give Examples. Where possible, draw on your previous experience
to give examples of where you’ve done the type of work that this job entails.
Be prepared to offer proof. Never lie!
- Strengths & Weaknesses. Most people have some idea of
their strengths, not so many will admit to having weaknesses. You should be prepared
to mention a few of both if asked. Remember, a weakness can just as easily become
a strength, if viewed in a positive light.
- Ask for the Job! You would be amazed how many candidates will
go to the trouble of really preparing for the interview, only to leave things
at a loose end. If you want the job, tell the employer. This demonstrates commitment
and can make the difference between success and failure.
